Today was the first day my kids didn't sing television theme songs since that last post. Instead, they passed the time by guessing my age.
I tell every group of kids I have that I will gladly tell them my age IF they ask me on the last day of school. If they forget, solly cholly -- it's gonna be the last day of school the following year until they can ask again. But that doesn't keep them from guessing how old I am.
I generally get peppered with ages all over the map. Today's range was nineteen to forty-three, I think. Most guess in the late twenties or early thirties. They like to pick apart my appearance as evidence. Thankfully, I learned today that I don't have all that ugly old stuff all over my face, so I can't be over thirty. I like faking them out and looking shocked, or smiling at one of their guesses, or saying yes to every suggestion. It's best when they say, "That's it! She smiled when I said she was thirty-nine! That's how old she is, I figured it out! I win!"
What they don't know is that years of dealing with disgruntled parents of kids and college students have taught me to keep my face in check, and I can smile genuinely anytime I want to. Including when you guess an age that clearly is not bound in any way with the truth.
They think they're tricky and they'll ask, "When's your birthday?" I divulge the month and day, but not the year. "Awww, maannnn! Wait, so what year did you say you were born?" I always answer 1946. The best part of this is counting how many kids actually do the math. One girl worked reeeeally hard on that one this afternoon.
Then one said, "No, wait, you can't be born then because my GRANDMA was born in 1962!!"
GASP. Don't tell my parents.
A few of my boys then started some weird game of seeing who was falsely the oldest -- "I was born in 1900!" "Well I was born in 1704!" "I was born in BC times!" "I was born in a thousand BC!" "I was born before time began!" "I was born in infinity BC!"
Then one yells, "Well I was born in AC!!"
And he was serious.
At least we know we've got the alphabet on lock.
