ten spring things

Writer's workshop prompt of choice:  ten spring must-haves.

I like to make lists when I don't have to do things on them (or when I've already done those things so I can go ahead and cross them off).  So of course this prompt drew me in.  Here is a list of ten things I think every woman should have for this fantastic spring 2011 season.

1.  A pair of wedge sandals.  They are very "in" this season.  Believe me, I would know.  The fantastic thing about wedges is that you have the height of the heel, but the stability of...not a flat, but not a heel.  It's the casual-classy option!  And yes, you can wear them with anything -- skirt, shorts, dress, swimsuit (but honestly you'll look like you're trying too hard), whatever you want -- and you'll look fantastic!
2.  Fake tanning lotion.  We don't want to see your ghastly un-summered legs.  I don't even want to see my OWN ashen pallor extending from my cute shorts.  Please deal with that before donning your springtime faves.  You look ill.
3.  A great self-esteem.  You'll be able to pull off all the fresh spring looks if you act like you look good in them.  Without this, it won't matter how lovely you are.  Everyone will know that you think you're pitiful.  Ladies, you are amazing!  Let no one tell you differently.  Revel in your own fabulosity!
4.  At least one good friend.  Life and warm breezes are so much more fun when you have a girlfriend to share them with, am I right?
5.  Hot outfits for casual days.  Life is too short to wear shorts and tees every time it's hot outside.  Running to the grocery store and then to the cleaners?  Why not slip on a flippy and flirty dress instead of your soft and comfy go-tos?  Or if you're stuck on shorts or capris, go for a fun, summery top instead. It'll really help you out on good ol' number three.
6.  Comfortable walking shoes.  I'm not the biggest fan of exercise.  I wouldn't even venture so far as to say that exercise and I are on cordial terms.  Here's the deal, though -- spring is heaven.  The breezes, the verdant vegetation (double-vocab word bonus!!), the sunshine and vitamin D...you know you've missed them.  Don't take them for granted.  Go for a walk.
7.  Happy tunes.  Ones for driving, for relaxing, for poolside, for naps, for nights out, for the pre-shopping pump-up...
8.  Open-able windows.  Are windows really any good if you can't open them and let the 75-degree breezes blow through?  Open them suckers up and get fresh.
9.  A cleaning service.  With my one-bedroom apartment, it's not really necessary.  Seriously, Mom, it's not -- I can do it on my own.  But for those of you who have more space and less time, I think it's a great idea, even if it's just a one-time spring cleaning.  You'll feel so much better.
10.  A ballcap.  I know some of you are cringing at the thought of smushing your hair.  Just know that not only do guys love girls in ballcaps (I've heard them say it lends an air of approachability, and goodness knows that all I need is a man to approach me), but hats are fantastic at keeping the leather-making and spot-inducing sunshine off your face when you don't want it there.  And it's a great way to cover up hair on the days when *gasp* you just don't want to get a shower.

Ooh, I would put light summer scarves and cardigans on the list if they asked me for twelve, and coozies (those insulatory drink holders) if they asked for thirteen.  And a lawn chair and tickets to local outdoor shows.  And coupons to eateries with outdoor seating.  And a planner for all the big plans and small plans you're making (and all the dates you get from your approachable hat-wearing).

Top seventeen spring necessities.  There you go.  Oh, did I say nail color in bright hues and polished neutrals?  Big deal this spring.  Just sayin.

Cute list! So can you recommend a fake tanning lotion that doesn't go horribly awry when applied?!

I use Bath and Body Works' Glow and Steady gradual tanning lotion. It takes a few days for color to happen, but it's much more natural than the faster stuff. Plus, you can just replace your normal lotion with it (or it'll force you to use lotion if you don't already!). I love it!
