Dear Capitalism,
I love you with all my heart. I know we have declared our love for each other before, but today I was reminded how much you really mean to me. I don't want our relationship to be a fling or a temporary thing--I want it to last. I can easily see myself spending the rest of my life with you. In fact, I wouldn't want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else.
Lots of people around here are enamored with Communism and Liberalism, but they really only like them because they're attractive and popular. They don't have any real substance, though. You do. You are so intelligent and interesting, and you are so faithful. I know that you will stay around for a long time. You won't be really showy and strong for a time and then fail me; you'll stick around forever. You aren't infallible, but I'm okay with that. I believe you're the best there is. I really do. I think you're wonderful.
Today my psychology professor was saying bad things about you (yes, we were talking about you in psychology for some reason--it really bothered me, since you have nothing to do with it--i really think he was just trying to disguise his own opinion as fact). He said you aren't kind and caring, and he said you don't look out for the interests of other people. He thinks you're responsible for all kinds of people's deaths, and that you just cause people to be harsh and greedy and malevolent. I don't think he understands you, though. I don't think he sees through the others, either, like we do. He really admires Communism, I think, but he doesn't seem to have a correct view of either of you. He thinks Communism looks out for everyone, is kind to everyone, and is basically the most wonderful thing in existence. In his mind, Communism gives to everyone and treats everyone equally, encourages peace and goodwill, and engenders love and unity among the masses. I can see how he could think that, if he were very idealistic and unrealistic and crazy like he is, but a truly intelligent and realistic person would see through Communism's ploys. They'd pick you. You make other things work, you make them make sense. That's why I like you. That's why I love you.
I don't love you because other people do, either. That's one of the reasons why Liberalism is so adored--people think that that's the cool thing to do. Liberalism will not keep them happy, though. Plus, it's a terrible reason to like someone or something just because others do. My parents like you a lot, you're my brother's hero, and some of my friends join me in wishing everyone appreciated you like we do. But I don't love you because they do. I love you because of you. Your merits, your quirks, you.
I just wanted to tell you that no matter what, no matter how much my professor and peers and the world try to change my mind and my heart, I'll always stick with you, too. You make me happy. You really are caring and generous and smart and fair and good. I love you for what you do for the world, and for me.
With genuine affection,
Laura
